Playstation 3? Sucks. Waste of money.

Gaming, by Justin Ong.

I was lured into picking up a Playstation 3 — a mistake I know, by a $100 price drop and the offer of six free movies and a free remote. The other thing that necessitated an immediate purchase — Sony removed the Emotion Engine (a chip that provides PS2 compatibility) to lower their costs. Starting with the 80gb version of the system, it’s software emulation only, and not all of the old games are compatible.. Of course, no tax and free shipping sweetened the deal, but when it arrived, I was struck by regret.

I was going to leave it in it’s box and just sit on it a while, but if I let too much time pass without testing it, it could be defective on arrival, and I didn’t want to have to deal with a warranty claim. (My Xbox 360 was DOA)

I hooked it up to a 1080P display, and booted it up, updated it, tried it’s DVD and PS2 Upscaling feature, and played Enchanted Arms for a few minutes. A through if not a little quick test, and was left unimpressed. Biggest waste of money since I bought that 360.. which hasn’t been used in six months.

Can’t someone make a game that isn’t based on a sport or a first person shooter?

At least I can install Linux on it and use it as a computer. For what, I don’t know.

  1. xbox 360 rules — ps3 sucks

  2. Sounds exactly like what I would end up saying if I bought one.

Thanks for the insight. This may very well be one of the easiest to find and honest accounts of what all consoles and titles are these days: garbage.

  3. Why?

I have a PS3. I have barely 20 days worth on use on it. I use it for my home theatre and the occasional game I like to play. How do I know I used it 20 days worth? My projector has a feature that gives me the lamp life and time used and I calibrated it on the same time.

    Problem….

My laser/reader/drive just WASTED itself. 3 months after the warranty expired….. Hooo-aah

Sony response… Tough. $190 to have it shipped to SONY and returned fixed. 3 months out of warranty!!

$190. Period. If your PS3 breaks, get ready to shell out $190 if it is the drive.

I have had two powersupply fans on this unit from day one because it runs hot. The drive is a piece of CRAP. I asked Sony Customer service what the expected life of the drive is….. WOULD NOT ANSWER.

I reworded the question and the person on the phone told me flat out, no matter how many ways I asked, they would not tell me how long the drive on a PS3 would last. Mine lasted 20 actual days of use. In January, I purchased a SONY remote for the Playstation 3. Do you think I have ever gotten it to work??? NO. The SONY Store manager told me to bring it back, most likely defective.

Last year, I started buying other companies products because SONY just hoses you on price for no better value that other less expensive brand name products. I used to be a poster boy for SONY. No longer.

They have serious customer service issues and their products suck. If you are thinking of buying a PS3, think again. Blu-Ray movies are outrageously priced and DVD, for the price difference is still excellent.

Most people have X-Box to play games or do it on a PC. The games I have played online on a PS3 all suffer the same issues….read the games forums…. the signal is CONSTANTLY dropped.

    SONY = GARBAGE

Never thought I would say this as I have been a loyal customer for over 20 years but I have had enough. SONY SUCKS.

  4. It’s quite sad when you think about it, when a technologically dominant console loses a war. And note that I say lose. Many Ps3 owners have swapped boats after the recent price cut, showing that their company is economically weaker and has less morale. Not even the release of God of War 3 will save the console, as its going down the gutter. Average life span for Sony left…2 YEARS until they make a new console. They’re desperate folks trust me.

  5. if dissadisfied w/ ps3 customer service please file a complaint w/ the federal trade commision. i have and need more to so sony will have to respond or be levied fines. its easy and can be done online.
